Queen's Park Savannah

The Queen's Park Savannah. It lays claim to being the largest traffic roundabout in the world. It is the largest open space in the Port of Spain area at about 260 acres and just over 2 miles around its perimeter. It is also home to many events, activities and pastimes, and even a cemetery. There used to be a horse racing track in it, people jog around it, walk their dogs, groups of people play various sports in there, including football, cricket and rugby, families take their kids to play or fly kites. There are concerts that take place, and is also home to events like Panorama and its the main stage for the carnival bands. There is a selection of treats around its perimeter, where vendors sell coconuts, oysters and snow cones, and in the evening, there is an area where many vendors set up shop to sell a wide variety of food, including chicken wings, jerk, bbq, doubles or soup. There are so many things to do and experience around the savannah, but today I will only focus on what we did.
I got a call from my sister telling me that since work was only half day, let's meet up with the family to take a stroll and have a snow cone. I agreed, and headed there as quickly as I could. I met them in an area that some call "the hollows" where there are benches and ponds that a lot of birds hang around. It was quite a few of us, and the kids were playing hide and seek and running around. After sitting there for a while, we took a walk to get some snow cones. Right next to the snow cone man was a coconut vendor, where I got myself a cold coconut water. It was so good, I quickly ordered another, then went for a snow cone myself, just ice though. As the time was passing, the tree we were sitting under was no longer shading us from the sun, so we moved a bit more into the savannah under some larger trees, it was still hot, and even the kids were feeling it because they kept eating more and more snow cones. It was really a great experience for them, not sure how much they get outdoors to run around and climb trees. Of all the things they did, it seemed like they probably had the most fun swinging from a branch.
As evening came closer, we were all a bit hungry, so we left to get a bite to eat, unfortunately not from the vendors in the savannah, I will leave that for another day and blog about that experience as well.
